NOCA – talking hardware

“NOCA is the first all-road all-year four-wheel cargo-bike for 2 people or 1 grown-up and 2 kids”

In todays TALKING HARDWARE episode, we are featuring NOCA, who are working on the functionality of a car combined with the advantages of a cargo bike.

I am happy that Christoph Neye, had the time to answer our questions.

Have fun reading and leave a comment if you have feedback or questions.

Give us your 30 seconds elevator pitch. What is it that you are working on? And who are the masterminds behind your company?

NOCA is the first all-road all-year four-wheel cargo-bike for 2 people or 1 grown-up and 2 kids. It was envisioned by Ossian, Anna, Julian, Adrian and Christoph.

How did you find each other and what was the final moment, when you decided you’re going to found a company together?

I got to know Julian and Adrian on a panel discussion in winter 2019. We stayed in touch and when the idea needed visualization, I contacted them again. We worked well together so I asked them about their interest in becoming co-founders. I met Anna during one of MotionLab.Berlin’s famous BBQ Events in autumn 2020. We talked for 60min before I asked her to become my co-founder. It was a 100% gut feeling

Why did you decide to start working on a hardware idea?

Because we are stupid and have an aversion to things that are easy or reasonable.

Why did you choose the city of Berlin to found a company? Do you think the city has an impact of how successful your project will be?

Let me start with a famous quote: “Berlin is Beste, du Opfa.” This, for us, encapsulates the welcoming and open nature of the city’s citizens. It also has a major impact on our development and testing stuff on location in an urban area because nobody cares.

If you could have one additional skill in your team, who would get it, what would it be and why?

It would be the ability to summon cupcakes and donuts and I think the reasons would be rather obvious. Doesn’t matter who would get it – this person would be God among (Wo)Men.

What do you want to achieve with your startup?

Change the way people move around the city. We know, our product is not the final answer to the very complex questions which we are facing in regards to CO2-footprint, noise- and dust pollution. But we can be an option. And if we change the behaviour of moving for just a few people and put a simple smile on their face while doing so, we have achieved a lot already.

What was your biggest fuck up during your startup career?

Finances. And I will also tell you the solution to not fuck it up. In your finance plan or rather any calculation, this is what you have to do: Spendings x2, Earning x0,5.

Which is the part of running a startup, that scares you the most and which is most fun?

Scary: not knowing where we are tomorrow. Most fun: not knowing where we are tomorrow.

When was the last time you really celebrated a success and what was it about?

I celebrate every Sunday for surviving the past week.

If you could change your life with every person in the world right now - would you do it? And if yes, with whom?

No. But if yes and just for a day: your mom.

Why are you at MotionLab.Berlin?

I am one of the founders.

Would you rather have the skills to see 10 minutes into your future or to reset what happened in the last 10 minutes?

Don’t need it because I already have an amazing skill that works as follows: I can see 10 minutes into the past and can use that knowledge to change the next 10 minutes. Don’t tell anyone.

What is your favorite song, that motivates you and brings you through a tough working day?

Well, you see, when you had a tough week and you feel the stress is finally falling off, you feel like you have achieved something and can be grateful for all that has happened, I think there is only one song that really encapsulates the feeling of freedom, heartwarming passion about life and the true meaning of friendship.

What is the current status quo of your project?

Looking for funding.

Are you currently looking for something specific? Investors, specific knowledge or positions?
Investors or Business Angel in regards to funding. Anyone interested in the project is welcomed to talk to us, ask questions, or do a test drive.
If the 14 year old you would read this interview, what is the one thing you want him to know?

Yes, you should invest in Google.

Who is probably the proudest person in your circle of what you have achieved in the last years?

Probably Grandma if she would know about any of this, which she does not.

When was the last time you got really sick of what you are doing and why?

Friday. And Friday.

If someone invested 1 million euro in your startup tomorrow, what would you use the money for?

Exactly for what we allocated this sum for in the finance plan. And then we would look for the missing 2.5 Million which still would be needed.

Anything else?
