The field of Internet of Things (IoT) is rapidly growing, and as a student, you may be wondering how to navigate the job market and find the right job in IoT. In this article, we will provide you with 5 tips to help you in your search for your first engineering job in the field of IoT.
Over the past 2 years I have accompanied around 150 students in our IoT Talent Program to learn new skills. Our program is funded in part by innovative SME companies in Germany looking for outstanding iot talents. Through countless conversations I found out what recruiters really pay attention to and I would like to give you 5 tips to stand out from the crowd to get your first engineering job in iot.
DEVELOP TECHNICAL SKILLS FOR YOUR FIRST JOB IN IOT
As an iot professional, you need to have strong technical skills, such as programming languages, database management and network security.
As an iot professional, you need to have strong technical skills, such as programming languages, database management and network security.
Employers are looking for candidates with practical skills that can be applied to real-world problems. To develop your technical skills, consider taking online courses, attending workshops and seminars, and participating in iot-related projects and iot programs.
My Tip: Learn Python, which is one of the most widely used programming languages in iot applications, or other programming languages within the field of iot. With these new skills, you can showcase your learnings by creating a small IoT project using a Raspberry Pi, an open-source hardware platform. This could demonstrate your understanding of both hardware and software, which are essential components of IoT and will be beneficial for your future job in iot.
- IoT Talent Program: Don’t know where to start? Learn all the skills related to IoT and project management in our 10-week program, to best and easily prepare you for your job in iot.

GAIN PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE THROUGH IOT INTERNSHIPS
Hands-on experience, internships and the participation in cooperation programs is highly valued in the iot industry.
Hands-on experience, internships and the participation in cooperation programs is highly valued in the iot industry.
Look for internships or cooperation programs that can provide you with the opportunity to work on IoT projects, learn new skills, and build your network. Practical experience can help you stand out from other candidates when applying for a job in iot.
The best way? Do an internship in an iot startup! Applying for an iot internship in an startup that specializes in smart home automation could be a good way. Within this framework it may be possible for you to work directly on developing hands-on prototypes for a new iot device and gain experience with software and hardware development, data analytics, and user experience design. Very valuable experiences to jump right into your job in iot!
- Next Big Thing: Next Big Thing AG is the Berlin-based blockchain and IoT company builder at the center of the German IoT ecosystem. They are constantly looking for new talents.
- Startup Facebook Groups: There are many startup groups where jobs in iot or engineering jobs are posted. The advantage in a startup is often that you take on responsibility immediately and you have to learn quickly, just the right thing to acquire new skills.
NETWORK WITH INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS
Networking can be a valuable tool when looking for your first job in IoT.
Networking can be a valuable tool when looking for your first job in IoT.
Attend industry conferences, workshops and meetups to connect with professionals in the field. Join online forums and discussion groups related to the internet of things and reach out to alumni or colleagues who are already working in the iot or engineering jobs.
My tip: Attend the iot World Conference through our iot Talent Program for students! The congress is the largest iot event in the world. There, you will be able to attend talks and panel discussions with industry experts and participate in networking events to connect with potential employers for your future job in iot. You can also search for local meetups and events. Some groups I would like to recommend directly to you are:
- Girls In Tech is committed to building the diverse and inclusive tech workforce the world needs. And they aim to see every person accepted, confident and valued in tech — just as they are.
- IoT+Network is an initiative by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate to promote IoT application fields. The network hosts regular events that you can attend for free.
RESEARCH POTENTIAL EMPLOYERS FOR YOUR FUTURE JOB IN IOT
Before applying for a job in iot, research potential employers to learn about their values, products and services. Find out what technologies they are working with and what kind of projects they are currently involved in. This can help you tailor your application and demonstrate your knowledge of the company.
My tip: If you are interested in working for a company that specializes in industrial iot solutions, research their current projects and technologies, such as predictive maintenance or asset tracking. Then, in your application for the job in iot, highlight your relevant skills and experience, and demonstrate how you could contribute to the company’s success.
SHOWCASE YOUR IOT PROJECTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS
Employers want to see what you have accomplished and what you can bring to the table when applying for your first job in iot. Create an online portfolio or resume that showcases your IoT-related projects, coursework and achievements. Highlight your technical skills, creativity and problem-solving abilities.
My tip: Create a portfolio website that showcases your IoT projects! Include detailed descriptions of the projects, the technologies you used, and the results you achieved. From my experience, it’s not always the top grades that make the difference, but the activities you do out of passion. Talk about it! Be proud and share your successes that you have achieved, for example, in student initiatives such as Formula Student or the company consulting team at your university.
