Did you know that heating accounts for 51% of the global energy demand? This is more than electricity and transportation combined, and only 11% of this energy comes from renewable sources. luft.energy – the fourth startup in Batch 3 of our hardtech accelerator program is on a mission to change this. With their innovative climate tech solution, they want to make heating more sustainable.

How does the climate tech solution of Luft work? “We’re designing fully renewable heat power plants. We use the cheapest form of renewable energy – solar PV – to power one of the largest end-uses of energy – heating our homes.” say the founders Joaquin and Marcin. The end goal? “To make sustainable energy cheaper than fossil fuels, of course!”

This is luft.energy, one of the startups out of batch 3 of our MotionLab.Berlin Startup accelerator program Hardtech Innovation who are working on innovative and sustainable climate tech solution for heating.

THE TEAM & THEIR MOTIVATION FOR CLIMATE TECH

Marcin and Joaquin believe in the transition to renewable energy and that it’s the most important climate tech challenge of our generation. “It will happen much faster if it makes economic sense!”

Marcin is a mechanical engineer by education, but dabbles in software and electronics when projects demand it – which is almost always. He loves geeking out about hardware project management. In fact, one of the first projects the pair did together, years ago, was centered around making hardware design teams more effective!

Joaquin is an experienced startup founder with a background in B2B technology product management. He is on the business side of things, “but a bit too nerdy for his own good”.

THE LEARNINGS IN OUR ACCELERATOR PROGRAM

The two had been members of MotionLab.Berlin before they joined the program, and say they love the space and the community. Along their journey, they have (very typically) been through many ups and downs. “We really appreciate the support we got from the accelerator team, and especially our mentor, Dan. It really helped”. The community has also been a source of strength in the development of their climate tech solution. “It’s great to have people around you going through the same journey and struggling with the same issues.” This is why we, at MotionLab.Berlin, think the community is one of our most valued aspects.

THE CLIMATE TECH INDUSTRY & NEXT STEPS

“In climate tech, not everything that glitters is gold, and sometimes it takes a long time to find things that actually make sense to build” The team’s goal for the program was to find a solution they were happy to devote the next 10 years of their life to. They invalidated many hypotheses along the way, and had to make hard decisions at every iteration cycle. This industry is fairly traditional and moves slowly, so customer development can take a while. But when it works, it’s worth it. “Now we’ve designed a solution that we’re very happy with and we’re getting first glimpses of commercial validation.”

The next steps will be to expand their partner network in the climate tech and energy sector. “We want to realize our vision of making renewable heating the cheapest, most convenient, most rational solution. But this will be a team effort, so please partner up with us!”

“It seems sacrilegious to discuss costs when considering the future of our planet, our species, and the beautiful critters and plants we share the earth with. […] But I will sharpen my pencil and show you how, in fact, the carbon-free future will save everyone money.” Saul Griffith, Electrify
