“The best time to build an EV charging station was 5 years ago. The second best time is now. “

Christine, Abhishek, and Katharine first crossed paths at Carbon13, a cleantech venture builder. “We bonded over our shared commitment to addressing the current climate emergency.”

Motivated by this common goal and their shared aspiration to fight climate change, they joined forces to establish VoltVogel. With VoltVogel, the team develops an electric vehicle charging solution with mobile stations, catering to fleet owners, event organizers, and car parks. Using AI, robotics, and sustainable batteries, they reduce carbon footprints and make charging more convenient than ever.

This is the team of VoltVogel, a startup out of our batch 3 of the berlin accelerator program Hardtech Innovation at MotionLab.Berlin.

THE TEAM & THEIR MOTIVATION

From corporate transitions to hands-on experience, the team brings diverse expertise to innovate fleet management, parking solutions, and autonomous EV charging, fueled by a shared passion for sustainable energy and seamless integration into daily life.

Christine Curtius, CEO of VoltVogel, transitioned from a corporate career to pursue a mission closer to her heart. As a mother of three daughters, she recognized the need for more efficient energy use. Now, she leads efforts to innovate fleet management and parking solutions, advocating for electric vehicle charging to be seamlessly integrated into daily life, even with three small kids in tow.

Dr. Katharine Shapcott is experiencing the challenges of public charging firsthand, as she owns an EV but cannot charge it at home. With her background in research, data science, and AI, she transitioned from being a neuroscientist to becoming a problem-solving and programming CTO at VoltVogel.

The third member, mechanical engineer Abhishek Nair is their perfect COO. He has years of experience in robotics, project management, and consulting – both in India and Germany. Having spent over 1.000 hours deploying robots in car parks, he knows about every question car park operators are asking. Autonomous features make his eyes sparkle.

FLEXIBLE & SUSTAINABLE ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING

“Electrify the world. Sustainably.” VoltVogel develops mobile and flexible EV charging solutions, integrating AI and robotics for more convenience and sustainability.

“We provide a flexible electric vehicle charging service for fleet owners, event organizers or car parks that do not see a solution in investing in fixed EV charging infrastructure.” Christine explains their idea. “VoltVogel stands for a new era of charging: we bring mobile stations directly to the car and let them charge it up. By using AI, robotics and sustainable batteries we reduce EV drivers’ carbon footprints, use renewable energy, and make charging an EV more convenient than filling up at a petrol station.”

The team of three joined the MotionLab.Berlin Hardtech Innovation Accelerator Program to acquire two pilot customers and develop their functioning prototype. Their most significant achievement within the program so far: securing the first pilot project with their Minimum Viable Product (MVP) at Deutsche Messe.

THE LEARNINGS IN OUR ACCELERATOR PROGRAM

“At first, it was difficult because some of the assumptions we made before joining the program were challenged, and we realized that our beachhead market was not as rock solid as we thought it was,” Katharine reviewed the process. In the end, they are happy about the support they got from the hardware community and the program to find a new direction. “The MotionLab.Berlin community was a huge support. Many thanks to the member who stopped us from gluing our looks like prototype to a table! Or teaching our CEO to drill through metal. Or providing inspiration to review the key components of our electric vehicle charging product.”

In particular, the team learned a lot about the prototyping process: “We learned:

  1. How to insist to our customers that hardware pilots must be paid.
  2. That there are many different types of prototype and to always make sure you know what you want to learn from each iteration.
  3. That atmosphere and communication provide motivation and inspiration.“

THE FUTURE OF EV CHARGING - NEXT PROJECTS & STEPS

We love to hear that VoltVogel plans to stay at MotionLab.Berlin, renting one of our MakerGarages. “Now that we’ve seen how great it is here you can’t get rid of us.”

In addition to expanding their pilot projects and creating an autonomously moving electric vehicle charging station, they are also seeking investors. Their next pilot is scheduled for June 2024, so keep an eye on their website for more information! “Help us make our big vision come true!”
