The 27th of May marked the beginning of a new and exciting chapter for MotionLab.Berlin,  bringing new and great opportunities for everyone in our ecosystem. On this day, we welcomed the Berlin Senator for Economy, Energy, and Enterprise Franziska Giffey, Sebastian Holtgrewe, and Dr. Stefan Franzke from Berlin Partner, who, together with René Giese, our Director of Corporate Partnerships, signed a joint strategic initiative to set up a new Deep Tech Hub at MotionLab.Berlin. MOTIONLAB.BERLIN – BERLIN’S NEW DEEP TECH HUB

Just a few hours after the official signing, the news was all over the media. You could follow the coverage in major Berlin newspapers and on social media under the headings ‘Technology’ and ‘Innovation’.

“Forge for Technological Innovation: New Deep Tech Hub Planned in Berlin’ (Berliner Zeitung, 28.05.2024) – “Deep Tech Hub: Berlin Launches Technology Network” (Der Tagesspiegel, 28.05.2024) – “New Deep Tech Hub Strengthens Berlin’s Position as a Leading Technology Center” (Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Operations, 27.05.2024 at berlin.de)

“Berlin is getting a new place for innovation: a Deep Tech Hub is being set up at MotionLab in the industrial estate on Bouchéstraße – a new hub for the growing ecosystem of research institutes, startups and SMEs that will develop ground-breaking technology-based innovations from scientific findings,” posted Franziska Giffey on her Instagram on that day.

And this is what it means for us: The support of the Berlin Senate and the official status as Berlin’s Deep Tech Hub amplify the resources, opportunities, and impact of our ecosystem, benefiting all our members and partners. This milestone marks a significant moment, not just for our team, but for the entire innovation landscape in Germany, underscoring our commitment to support innovators and entrepreneurs as they develop cutting-edge technologies aimed at achieving Net Zero goals by 2050.

“Today’s challenges cannot be solved solely through software. We need to remove barriers to help the brightest minds in the scene bring pioneering technologies to market. Collaboration is key in creating a future that benefits everyone. With strong partners, we will be able to gather resources and expertise necessary to establish Berlin as a global hub for deep tech,” said Fridtjof Gustavs, Managing Director of MotionLab.Berlin, as the news of the Deep Tech Hub signing was rapidly gaining traction online.

INTRODUCING: THE ECOSYSTEM MEMBERSHIP

“Of course, this is just the tip of the iceberg,” says René Giese, our newly-appointed Director of Corporate Partnerships, as we sit down with him to talk about another exciting development which goes hand in hand with the news on the Deep Tech Hub signing. “As Berlin’s Deep Tech Hub, we will be able to connect our seasoned startups and partners with other major players across various industries, providing them with a network of manufacturers, suppliers, and hidden industry champions both Germany-wide and abroad.”

This is where the idea of the Ecosystem Membership initially came from. Launched earlier in June, this new product stemmed from our experience with early-stage startups and the need to connect them with corporates and SMEs. As our first startups outgrow our space and conquer new heights, we see a strong need to further cater to them. One such approach is to involve larger entities, thereby creating opportunities for further cooperation, Germany-wide and abroad.

“We realized that MotionLab.Berlin was ready to extend its support to SMEs and corporates when we saw the growth and success of our innovation ecosystem, the increasing demand for collaboration from larger entities, and our ability to provide comprehensive resources, mentorship, and infrastructure to effectively support their unique needs,” continues René.

Brought together by MotionLab.Berlin, Abus and MORE Cargobike jointly developed a locking solution for cargo bikes with Abus's innovative Bluetooth-based locking technology.
  • 'Rapid Innovation' Bootcamp: MotionLab.Berlin X Siemens Energy
    MotionLab.Berlin and Siemens Energy co-developed an intensive on-site 5-day Design Thinking workshop to identify cost-saving opportunities in gas turbine auxiliary systems, bringing to our Deep Tech Hub in Berlin Siemens employees from around the world. Supported by ecosystem experts and mentors, this program is a great example of MotionLab.Berlin's global impact on corporate efficiency and industrial innovation.
  • Prototyping as a Service: MotionLab.Berlin X Rhenus Logistic
    MotionLab.Berlin's innovative "Prototyping as a Service" facilitated efficient product development, as seen in the creation of the Smart Safety Station for Rhenus Logistic, enhancing workplace accident recording in warehouses. MotionLab.Berlin's engineers and Rhenus Logistic's experts co-developed a smart, user-friendly solution: a station that improves employee safety and gathers valuable data for accident prevention.
