EXPERIENCING INNOVATION: TOURS AT MOTIONLAB.BERLIN

MotionLab.Berlin’s Alt-Treptow campus is a popular destination for group tours. We offer attendees a chance to experience first hand an innovative coworking location and makerspace in Berlin. These tours not only showcase the physical location and facilities but also include exclusive presentations from startups within MotionLab.Berlin’s ecosystem. Among the startups that have shared their experiences, products, and knowledge during these tours were Caliring, Open Funk, MAD, and Materialogic.

Between January and June 2024, we hosted 47 tours and catered to 1077 participants.  Whether you’re a corporate or student group, tours provide a first-hand look into daily life at MotionLab.Berlin. There was some great feedback from tour participants, who said things like, “The guided tours of the MotionLab.Berlin are incredibly valuable for our students as they gain a deep insight into how an entrepreneurial ecosystem is created and nurtured. On-site, they experience first-hand how collaborative approaches lead to the development and market readiness of innovative products.”

KNOWLEDGE SHARING: MASTERCLASSES & BOOTCAMPS

Masterclasses and bootcamps are the perfect way to share knowledge, fostering innovation, skill development, and professional growth. And there’s no better place to host such events than in the heart of a thriving hardtech innovation hub.

Our Alt-Treptow campus event venue played host to a variety of these events this year. It has been a pleasure to see participants connect with experts in various fields. Together they had the chance to upskill, build their prototypes, businesses, and strengthen their networks.

Over the past six months, countless information lectures, 27 masterclasses, and two bootcamp series (the Hardware Prototyping Bootcamp and the Strategic Funding Bootcamp) have taken place here at our event venue at MotionLab.Berlin.

BUILDING NETWORKS: CONFERENCES & HACKATHONS

A robust ecosystem and diverse networking opportunities are fundamental to success within innovation industries. For this reason, it has been incredibly rewarding to see some large networking events hosted within our event venue in Alt-Treptow.

For instance, in January, De:Hub Netzwerktreffen provided a key opportunity for De:Hub representatives and associates from all over Germany to come together under one roof. This event was attended by over 200 people.

Shortly after, two separate hackathons were hosted at the Alt-Treptow campus. This demonstrated the unique environment our eventlocation in Berlin offers. A venue for events where people can combine networking with building and developing products, and experimenting with technology. Here, they can find the tools, equipment, and community to bring their ideas to life.

The team from Hackaday Europe said:

“We’ve loved hosting our annual Hackaday Europe conference at MotionLab.Berlin these past two years! Our team and open source hardware community always feels so welcome and supported throughout our event. Having to host a conference in a country we are not based in can be tricky, so we always really appreciate how easy the MotionLab team makes it for us to arrive just a few days before and pull off such a fantastic experience for our community. Plus the amazing tools, facilities, and production resources are the cherry on top!”

At the end of May, our largest annual event, Demo Day, took place with the highest attendance to date and over 370 registrations. Demo Day marked the finish line for this year’s Hardtech Innovation Accelerator Program. In addition we were able to celebrate the vibrant and supportive community at MotionLab.Berlin.

Other events in this vein included firmware meetups, sustainability talks, panel discussions, and numerous team conferences and workshops. Many external companies utilized the space and event venue. They benefited from the collaborative atmosphere to generate new ideas and foster team building.

TECHNICAL SKILLS: HANDS-ON WORKSHOPS

As a makerspace where makers can build their physical prototypes and projects, it is only natural that hands-on workshops are regularly held here. These technical workshops are led by experts in their field. They offer tech enthusiasts and professionals a chance to develop their skills and learn about new technologies.

MotionLab.Berlin hosts weekly machine workshops and advanced training to upskill the community on the technology available on campus. Additionally, many independent workshops have been hosted at our event venue by visiting specialists. We also collaborated with our generous sponsors, such as Prusa 3D and Würth Elektronik, to hold various workshops..

In the past six months, the Alt-Treptow campus has hosted 84 workshops and technology classes, with over 900 registrations for these events.

There are recurring machinery and technical workshops taking place at our event venue in Berlin.

INSPIRING CREATIVITY: MUSIC & ART EXHIBITIONS AT OUR EVENT VENUE

Fostering an innovative community is made all the more possible through the active and ongoing participation of the artists in our ecosystem. One event and art exhibition series that has contributed to the creative atmosphere here is AV Jam. This event takes place each month at our event venue Berlin and is hosted by members of our community. AV Jam provides a safe space for audio and visual artists to come together and jam freely and spontaneously. It creates a collaborative environment where others can experience and enjoy their live art and creations. This year, five AV Jam events have been held in the event venue of our Alt-Treptow campus.

In April, our main event space hosted the Science of Rave. This event explored rave culture and facilitated discussions about attendees’ experiences amidst a night of dancing, music, and networking.

FOSTERING CONNECTIONS: COMMUNITY EVENTS

Under the guidance of our dedicated community manager, Melinda Varga, a series of thoughtful and intimate events has been curated for the enjoyment of our members and extended network. Every Wednesday, our community breakfast, BreakfastInMotion, draws people together. It offers a platform for 3-4 startups to share their startup journeys and insights. This weekly gathering has become a core part of daily life at the Alt-Treptow startup campus. It provides the perfect setting to make new connections and build on existing ones.

Additionally, we host a monthly community dinner where one startup or group organizes dinner for the rest of the community. These gatherings provide a casual and inviting atmosphere for members to get to know each other.

In the words of our community manager, Melinda, “Bringing the community together at events like BreakfastInMotion and community dinners is crucial for fostering collaboration, networking, and a sense of belonging among members. These gatherings create opportunities for knowledge exchange, inspire innovation, and strengthen the support system within MotionLab.Berlin. The personal connections and friendships that already exist and continue to grow at these events are what truly make our community special and create the magic that so many people feel when entering our space.”

SEMI-FORMAL GATHERINGS: BRUNCH, BBQ AND MORE

Following on from these community events, we have also seen several larger, semi-formal gatherings held at MotionLab.Berlin. One example of this is our NetworkInMotion series which is centered around a theme and includes a creative food concept, and a keynote or a panel discussion. These events are a perfect blend of a relaxed atmosphere and an informative experience. They are often attended by a network of people from different, but complimentary backgrounds.

We would love to see more of these types of events taking place at our event venue Berlin. This means we will continue to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and expansion of innovative networks across Berlin and Germany.
